Watch Dog &Pet
We generally agree that media is a watch dog and we rely on information that is reported by media. Are they still the same today? What has been changed in the way how media representing themselves as a Watch Dog or pet? Today media is very powerful in the way how they can influence our social, economic, believes and Political. Also business makes huge profit out of it. Power and money always go together.
What the general public think about our watch dog and how they respond to the changes on our media society. What consequences may result from it? Are we part of the changes of our media? It could be the way we react to how the truth and facts are delivered by our media. I totally agree that everyone sees things differently and especially for the people who work for the media they want public attention. That’s right, how to attract attention is a big thing in the Media. Our judgement and opinion is based on the information from our media. What we see and hear from the media have a great consequence on the general public. Do our media go over the line? So Freedom of speech gives Media more power to cross the line.
I believe that the information we have been received from the media has been made over and is too much. The public are confused with the information from our media. Do we want the truth or do we want something more! How many people really care about the real truth and how does our media balance this? There is a difference between Watch Dog & Pet. The first one is we need the Watch Dog but it not very social, and the second one is the Pet which makes our life more fun and interesting.
People will pay special attention to the serious truth when something that worries them, such as living conditions, wars and economic downturn so the watch Dog becomes more important. When life becomes easier and more stable, we might expect the media to deliver the truth and be more enjoyable to watch and read so that is where the pet comes from. As public do we want our media to impress us or do we want the truth even it is ugly.
It is understandable that we are a lucky country and we are in a better place and we have an easy life. So we don’t have to be too serious about the truth as long as it is interesting and based on the truth. However, we expect our media in the meantime to still have to be the Watch Dog and then we are allowed to have something more fun, it is life. Perhaps 60% of the time we expect our media to be the Watch Dog and 40% time to be the Pet. As long as the Watch Dog still watches, who cares! So as public we need to be smart people who watch the Watch Dog to do the job. It is all about balance and responsibilities between media and general public.
I guess this what I am try to say; it is clear shows that the relationship between Public and the Media is the needs from each other and at the same time we need to watch over each other as well.
Clever metaphor with the "watch dog" and the pet!
