Honestly. The last thing I want is when I turn the news on is twenty "fluffly dog" stories and the news anchors bantering back and forth about boring shit. This is meant to be news!
I'm not condoning mass killing, not by a long shot, but covering these events makes for interesting news, right? It draws public interest. It makes people think. I don't believe that it encourages people to embark on a rampage of vigilante justice, unless they're after some kind of sick infamy.
Don't let truth get in the way of a good story. Probably not the best mantra for a journalist, but maybe they're on to something. We like the speculation and the exaggerated gore of tragic events. And even though we don't like to admit it, we like to be shocked- that's News 2012.
