You, Me and the World Around Us

What if we just accepted everything around us?

I think we get caught up in what we want and forget about what we need. We may want endless hours of entertainment but we also need facts. We let the media be entertainment because the majority of people don't want to be confronted with real problems. We also like a good scandal. We like feeling informed and knowing that our stories will entertain and to an extent educate. I think our expectations have led to lower media integrity as we want a constant cycle of information and new stories don't happen everyday yet we still have 5 daily news programs.

The 5th Estate is incredibly useful because they, or should I say we, aren't making money because of aticles we write. We're not on the clock. We aren't worried about money but rather who see's what we've written and their response. I think that because of this we have a huge impact on news media. We can't control what channel Ten will do but if they do something unethical or manipulative we can share this observation on social media and garner attention. We have at our disposal a vast array of tools that can help us get attention.

Because of this there are personalities who hold a considerable amount of influence. These people are important to politicians and businesses as they can sway opinion. News media in the old days use to be about personalaties and in current years they have been extremely lacking in character. I think to some degree this is why shows like the 7pm Project are doing well. Instead of just listening to some well groomed people in suits rattling off information at a camera we have seemingly real personalities. The 5th Estate has power because it can be simultaneously critical of the news, entertaining and seemingly trusted.
